The athletes from Azerbaijan are ready for Sambo

The Sambo hopes to get an Olympic recognition and also from the the governing body, to be a demonstration sport at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

"The Olympic Games are a very good opportunity for Sambo to show the world what a beautiful sport it is. It is similar to Jujitsu and encourages improvisation on the mat. It`s growing in popularity and it deserves a place in the Olympics." said Gasca Viorel, national coach of the Romanian team.

A good chance to take the gold is the Sambo athlete Amil Gasimov, who is at 74kg world champion. All four members of the Azerbaijan`s team are from Ganja, the second largest town of the country which gave four world champions over the years, and where the sport is very popular.

"We expect medals from all our athletes.The fans can inspire our athletes - so please come and support them" said the national team`s coach Yagub Abdullayev.

From Azerbaijan are competed athletes at all eight weight categories for men and for women.
Russia and Belarus also have eight in their teams, and other strong participation come from Bulgaria, Georgia, Moldova, Macedonia, Romania and Ukraine.

The Romanian coach Viorel has hopes for his women`s team, specially for Daniela Hondiu in 60kg.
