Schiavone won the battle of the former champions after 4 hours

The champion of "Roland Garros" in 2009 Svetlana Kuznetsova and her successor on the throne in the next season Francesca Schiavone played the third longest game in the history of the tournament of WTA in Paris.

Schiavone beat No18 placed Russian with 6:7 (11) 7:5, 10:8 after 3 hours and 49 minutes.

The two titled veterans hold the record for the longest match in Grand Slam. In 2011 Francesca and Svetlana played 4 hours and 44 minutes at the Australian Open, when the Italian prevailed with 6:4, 1:6, 16:14.

The first part of today`s game continued 82 minutes and was won by Kuznetsova. She took a break in the second part, but Schiavone managed to return and eventually levelled the sets.

In the third part, Kuznetsova leaded again with 2:0 and 4:2. Then the tennis player from St. Petersburg served for the match at 5:4 and 6:5, as in the last case came to the point of winning the match. Franca reflected with a backhand that clipped the line. In the 18th game of the final part, Kuznetsova sent a volley in the net and Schiavone took the victory.

The longest match of "Roland Garros" in the Open era was in 1995, when Virginie Buisson beat Noelle van Lottum after 4 hours and 7 minutes with 6:7 (3), 7:5, 6:2.

In the third round, the 34-year-old Schiavone meets the surprise of the court - Andreea Mitu. Hundredth ranked Romanian beat the No12 Karolina Pliskova after 2:6, 7:6 (5), 6:4.
